What is an aromatherapy consultation like? What should you expect, and why might you want to have one?
How to prepare for your first aromatherapy session
An aromatherapy consultation is an opportunity for an Aromatherapist to get to know you and your particular health goals and challenges in detail. In my case, I am going to ask you a lot of questions about your health and your health history, your lifestyle, your habits, your nutrition and exercise, details about any medications, and many other facets of your health. In my case, I also assess you, the client, from an Ayurvedic (traditional Indian medicine) standpoint to determine any imbalances that may be happening in the body. I also use knowledge from TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) to further hone in on what lifestyle shifts and what essential oils may be supportive and helpful to you.
Expect your aromatherapist to ask you a lot of questions. You may need to have a list of current medications and allergies. Your aromatherapist will ask about your current health goals and concerns, and she will help you create a customized plan to meet those goals.
Benefits of aromatherapy consultations for health
Aromatherapy is a very holistic art. It is meant to encompass all of the person--body, mind, soul, and spirit. I have consulted with people who had skin issues and I have consulted with people who wanted to enhance their own spiritual practices. I have consulted with those who wanted and needed more accountability for making healthy choices. I have helped folks improve their relationship with food and with positive, nutritional choices.
Along with all of that, depending on your goals, you will be sent home (or receive after the fact, depending on the situation) with several custom synergies and perhaps some ready-made materials that I already have on sale through my apothecary.
Types of essential oils used in aromatherapy consultations
Your aromatherapist may formulate with essential oils you have heard of, and he may also choose to use lesser-known essential oils for your specific concerns, or even to use pre-formulated products as part of your protocol. As an example, in the photo above, these were the materials recently provided to a client who was seeking to feel more grounded and less anxious. She also had some chronic aches and pains she was hoping to find more comfort for. So, she was sent home with my ready-made @Ease Serum for the achy muscles and then two other custom serums--one for energy and one to help her feel more grounded and in control.
About two weeks to two months after your initial consultation, you may have a follow up to see how you are doing with your goals and how your serums are working for you.
So, while Aromatherapists do not diagnose, treat, or cure any disease, we are going to help you find more balance overall in your life. And the body itself is the miracle--when we can support it--people often report finding more success with their goals, whatever they may be.
